Drugs: Don’t ask why… Ask why not?

We may often ask the wrong question when it comes to addiction.

We know the reason one turns to substance (or behaviours) is because at some level it brings them an amount of comfort. The underlying issues of addiction can be physiological or psychological (emotional) and can include disorders that cause disharmony such as ; anxiety disorder, bi-polar disorder, ADD, ADHD, anger issues, arrogance, sex, gambling (and the general category of self esteem issues) etc..

We can surmise then that at some point the substance or behaviour brought an amount of comfort to the disharmony(chaos) or angst of a person, until the ‘solution’ became the problem… addiction. This is the model sometimes referred to as ‘self medicating’.

The question then becomes not ‘why does someone use substance’..,
but ‘why not’?

Without the life skills to deal with life in a rectified and holistic way, we will always find ‘some way’ to find comfort. This is a basic human (default) mechanism of survival.

This can change with a good holistic program of recovery.
